I fetched the new svn and applied the patch per your instructions.
Everything in your test file seems to be working just fine.

I am using cvs emacs version:

GNU Emacs (i686-pc-linux-gnu) of 2007-09-16 on t40

I did not immediately see this variable.  I had to grep in the emacs
lisp directory to read the documentation.  The instructions you  provide
are sufficient, however.
